Amy Furman, Owner and Lead Transcriber for Shaman Braille, first
started Transcribing at the age of 19 when she started the course
towards her Literary Certification. As soon as she completed
the course she started working for the local school district at the
age of 20, receiving her formal Literary Certification at the age of
21. At 23 she was provided an opportunity to venture into the
private sector instead and she took it.
Since that time she has specialized in some
of the higher level math and science courses she took during her own
education. These include Chemistry, Calculus, Geometry, and
anything with a high level of tactile illustrations and/or graphics.
She has recently expanded her services to include any level of
school work, from pre-K and elementary education to college level
courses. She has also started working for districts and
clients outside of her local area, from coast to coast.
As someone who has worked for a school district for a five years,
receiving frequent student input, she feels that she has a unique grasp on student needs and
understanding within her business. She strives to ensure all
Braille Services are both accurate reproductions of the print
originals, and can be clearly and easily understood by the Braille
readers. She uses both hand drawn tactile graphics and
in-Braille techniques, where available, to ensure all materials are
reproduced in the most comprehensive and timely manner possible.
With the addition of on-site Embossing and Thermoform Services she
can provide considerable savings for multiple copies of the same
book.
